Fox Squirrel

Fox Squirrel eating winter berries.

I have a beautiful Oak tree in my back yard and every fall the squirrels harvest the acorns. This year I had a bumper crop and they were especially busy burying them in the ground. Sometime, watch a squirrel bury a nut, and then try to find it afterwards! You’ll see that after picking the spot, a hole is quickly dug with the front paws and the nut is poked into it. Then, with a motion that would remind you of someone working the shell game at a carnival, it will deftly cover up its prize. Later, when they are hungry, they will return and dig them up for a meal locating the nuts with their sense of smell. Often times the nuts are not found and this is a very significant source of new trees.  Thus the saying, "even a blind squirrel finds a nut sometimes."

They are called FOX Squirrels because of the rufous-colored fur on their belly.

Window with lace curtains

Now Close the Windows by Robert Frost
Now close the windows and hush all the fields:
If the trees must, let them silently toss;
No bird is singing now, and if there is,
Be it my loss.

It will be long ere the marshes resume,
I will be long ere the earliest bird:
So close the windows and not hear the wind,
But see all wind-stirred.

Yooper Deer

Michigan is composed of two peninsulas, the Lower Peninsula and the Upper Peninsula.  The Mackinaw Bridge also known as the Mighty Mac links these two peninsulas.  The Upper Peninsula is known as the U.P. and its residents are called "Yoopers".  Those of us who live in the Lower Peninsula, below or under the bridge, are called "Trolls".

Last winter I ventured to the U.P. to search out the Great Gray Owl.  I never found the owl but I did see these" Yooper Deer".  I'll be back to the U.P. to visit my friend Ozzie and maybe this year we'll find the Great Gray Owl.

Mickie

No matter how little money and how few possessions you own,
having a dog makes you rich.   (Louis Sabine)

Mickie, my 11 year old cockapoo, is my constant companion whether I'm out taking pictures or doing my new passion of Geocaching.  Although I created this image of Mickie, my good friend Mike did all of the framing for this photo using Photoshop.  THANKS MIKE!!
